Callum Drift (Dwayne Johnson), head of The North Pole security, teams up with a hacker Jack O'Malley (Chris Evans) to locate a kidnapped Santa Claus (a muscle bound J. K. Simmons) on Christmas Eve.
Red One is watchable thanks to its A List cast but the script is patently obvious (the final resolution particularly) and the colour palate is too muted. It's supposed to be a bright, engaging Christmas film but it looks so dull!
For such a big budgeted movie the SFX varies wildly from great to mediocre.
Johnson and Evans make a likable team but you never really see their characters, just the actors portraying them. Kiernan Shipka does what she can with Grýla, a Christmas witch, but she doesn't have much of worth to do.
Callum can shrink and enlarge items, such as toy cars and change them into real cars, which is clever. His showdown with Krampus (Kristofer Hivju) is fun, as is the Snowman beach showdown, but overall this is too generic to make a lasting impression.
Lucy Liu co-stars as the Director of MORA. It's okay.
