The Karate Kid Part II (1986)

Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) accompanies his karate teacher Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) to see his dying father in Okinawa, when an old friend-turned-rival, Sato (Danny Kamekona) shows up, seeking revenge against Miyagi.

We have to give the film-makers credit here for not just simply rehashing the original. They came up with a genuine continuation.

There isn't much Karate here (until the end) but the storyline is engaging with new adversaries for Daniel and Miyagi to face in the form of Chozen (Yuji Okumoto) and Sato.

Tamlyn Tomita is memorable as O Bon dancer Kumiko, who has eyes for Daniel.

Characters showing up in places they simply wouldn't be creates contrivance, but it's still fun.

Morita continues to excel as the wisdom spouting Mr. Miyagi and the end fight excites (with the inventive drum technique.) The score is good and 'Glory of Love' by Peter Cetera, is a great love song.

An entertaining sequel.
