Home Alone (1990)

Macaulay Culkin is brilliant as the boy left home alone to fend (and defend) for himself in John Hughes classic Christmas comedy.

Home Alone is highly contrived (in order to make the situations work) but it also has great heart and quotable dialogue with superior comedic set-pieces.

Joe Pesci (Harry) and Daniel Stern (Marv) are superb as The Wet Bandits, two quirky burglars who are casing the neighbourhood. Harry wants to rob the McCallister house but Kevin is ready for them with ingenious booby traps! Catherine O'Hara is Kevin's worried mum, Kate, John Heard is Kevin's supportive dad, Peter and Devin Ratray is Kevin's trouble causing brother, Buzz.

Robert Blossom's, Neighbour, Marley's beautiful heart to heart with Kevin inside the local church is a highlight. John Candy is Gus Polinski, a good natured polka musician who helps Kate. The John Williams score is memorable. Excellent.
