Doris (a wonderful Maureen O'Hara) has brought her daughter, Susie up not to believe in fairy tales (a charming, natural, Natalie Wood.) When a department store Santa Claus (a pitch perfect Edmund Gwenn) claims to be the real thing, Susie believes him, but Kris Kringle is institutionalized. A young lawyer (a memorable John Payne) decides to defend him by arguing in court that Kris is telling the truth!
Whether he's singing along with a girl in Dutch or teaching young Susie how to pretend to be a monkey (in the film's best scene), Gwenn is superb. Doris's cynical nature and her expected change of heart is beautifully handled, and the love story works well.
The trial is exciting and the resolution is particularly clever. Because, how could anyone in their right mind declare there is no Santa Claus? Now they just have to prove that Santa exists! One of the greatest, most loved, Christmas films of all-time. Don't miss it!
