After he receives a letter from the Old West, 80's teenager, Mary McFly (a exemplary Michael J. Fox) travels back in time to 1885 (with the help of 1955's Doc Brown), to a gun toting, rowdy, Hill Valley. Buford "Mad Dog" Tannen (a brilliant Thomas F. Wilson) will shoot and kill Doc (a fantastic Christopher Lloyd) in a few days if Marty can't prevent it. But that's the least of their worries, the DeLorean (time machine) Plutonium has dried up and there's no way of getting back to 1985!
Full of great moments like the (Clint) Eastwood showdown, and memorable characters like Clara Clayton, the gentle, kind, love interest for Doc (an excellent Mary Steenburgen), part III is more grounded than Part II with a straightforward plot that works well. The Wild West setting was an inspired choice.
The runaway train sequence is thrilling with edge of your seat suspense, as our heroes attempt to get back to the future. The 2015 hoverboard even makes an appearance.
The special effects are terrific for the time with rousing music by Alan Silvestri.
BTTF 3 isn't heavy, it's a clever, thrilling send-off to a superb trilogy.
