Rosaline (2022)

Rosaline (played by the brilliant Kaitlyn Dever) is in love with Romeo (Kyle Allen), yes, that Romeo, and he in love with her, until one day he meets Juliet (Isabela Merced) and falls instantly in love with her.

Well, he would, wouldn't he? Him being of Romeo and Juliet fame!

Rosaline understandably isn't too happy and tries to break them up. She does this by lying to her cousin, Juliet, telling her that Romeo is a playboy, who tries it on with everyone. In the mist of this Rosaline's father (Bradley Whitford) is trying to set his daughter up with a stream of suitors, including dashing Dario (Sean Teale), who she simply can't stand (until she starts to like him.)

Rosaline is entertaining, if entirely predictable fare. Like Catherine Called Birdy (2022) and The Princess (2022), it revolves around a young woman in olden times, but with modern sensibilities.

Some people will hate this clash of historical setting vs. modern ideals, while others will embrace it. Its heart is in the right place. It's well shot by director Karen Maine, with some good looking scenery, and that it remains immensely watchable is thanks to Dever. Minnie Driver co-stars as Nurse Janet, Rosaline's confidant.
