Scream (1996)

What's your favourite scary movie?

These horror savvy teens know the rules of the genre and they're not gonna give up without a fight! When they are targeted by a (mask wearing) Ghostface killer, they know what to do, and what not to say, “I'll be right back,” at least that's the theory! Writer Kevin Williamson creates a groundbreaking, horror spoof (with an extremely clever script), alongside assured direction from horror master, Wes Craven.

The genius of Scream is in how it subverts expectations of the genre and turns them on their head.

Drew Barrymore is absolutely incredible here. Oscar worthy! Neve Campbell is brilliant as hero / student Sidney (in her star making role) and Courtney Cox (from TV's Friends) is just as good as a bitchy news reporter trying to get the latest scoop. Jamie Kennedy, Skeet Ulrich, Matthew Lilard and David Arquette are great too. In fact, the entire cast is fantastic. The ending is a comedy horror, gore fueled masterpiece with wonderful dialogue and thrilling action. “You hit me with the phone d*ck!” Look out for horror film references galore, see how many you can spot.

The absolute best of its genre. "It's a Scream baby!"
