Elizabeth Sparkle (a phenomenal Demi Moore) longs to be young and beautiful again. at age 50 her film career has dried up, so she orders "The Substance", a black market serum, which can clone a younger, beautiful, version of herself.
Be careful what you wish for!
The Substance is an assault on the senses with flashy, perspective altering camera shots and an overabundance of (admittedly incredible SFX) body horror gore, starting off quite grounded and becoming more over the top as it goes.
The performances are great and it's always fascinating but what's in it for Elizabeth if she can't remember her other life? Sue (a brilliant Margaret Qualley) and Elizabeth are really different people! It would make more sense if they shape shifted.
Side note: Sue is far too good at DIY!
The best scene sees a paranoid Elizabeth staring in the mirror and suffering a major panic attack. Something we can all relate to because at a certain point our looks are what they are and they're not gonna get any better.
Scenes can run overlong and (although not as bad as you've heard) it's not for the squeamish.
