Urban Hymn is a British coming of age drama, set against the backdrop of the 2011 England riots, staring a captivating, brilliant, Letitia Wright (Black Panther, 2018) as volatile teen Jamie. Jamie is a potential singer songwriter who lives in a care home with her best friend, Leanne (a ferociously brilliant, Isabella Laughland), who is even more volatile and possessive than Jamie.
New to the job, care worker and local choir singer, Kate (a superb Shirley Henderson, Harry Potter) attempts to help Jamie achieve her dreams, while struggling to stop Leanne's bad influence over her. Kate and her husband, David (Steven Mackintosh) are grieving the loss of their young son, after their son was stabbed and killed in the playground.
Urban Hymn is a realistic, gritty slice of life but not one without hope, it is also a feel good drama. Although it's quite predictable (over all), it's also well acted with some genuine shocks along the way. You'll be rooting for Jamie to succeed against the odds. Strong swearing.
