Alien: Romulus (2024)

Romulus takes place after Alien (1979), and is about six young space colonists who encounter hostile creatures while scavenging a derelict space station.

They are: Cailee Spaeny (as Marie Raines "Rain" an orphaned miner), a superb David Jonsson (as Andy, an android and Rain's adoptive brother), Archie Renaux (as Tyler Harrison, Kay's brother), Isabela Merced (as Kay Harrison, Tyler's pregnant sister), and Spike Fearn (as Bjorn, Tyler and Kay's cousin.)

Alien: Romulus is the best sequel since Aliens (1986), with Director Fede Álvarez making aliens scary again. Effective horror and suspense give way to some genuinely freaky imagery, paying homage to The Thing (1982.) You could argue that it's a little too dark, serious and bleak, you could also argue that's exactly what it needed.

The film is well shot with awesome space imagery and believable ship movement. Set pieces are unique and clever, see: the jumping (water logged) Facehuggers and the gravity defying acid. But dialogue callbacks are unfortunately cringe-worthy.

Despite an over-familiar plot and chase game, Director Álvarez asserts his stylish stamp on the proceedings to make it worthwhile, feeling both modern and 1970's lived in.

Side note: AI is used to bring back Ian Holm's robotic character from Alien (1979), an actor who is sadly no longer with us. Is this a necessary plot device (to establish continuity) or completely tasteless? You decide!
