Heretic (2024)

Heretic is about religion and control. It's an intense, captivating and thought-provoking, clever film, that will keep you glued to your seat.

It isn't predictable, which is a rarity these days, you genuinely don't know where this is heading. Hugh Grant is superb as the calm mannered, quietly spoken Mr Reed who invites two young missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints into his home (so they can preach the gospel) and ends up turning the tables on them. The fact that he is so well mannered becomes creeper as the film goes along. Sophie Thatcher as Sister Barnes and Chloe East as Sister Paxton are both excellent in their roles.

We often find ourselves agreeing with (the just as fanatical) Reed as he makes his well reasoned points, which is a hard pill to swallow, considering what comes next.

The ending is left open to interpretation (in a good way) and asks what do you believe? Was it the work of Devine intervention or was this one last hurrah? The ending will likely be discussed for years to come.

There are one or two plot holes (don't bother bolting the door Sister Barnes), but overall this is exciting and suspenseful with a dynamite script.
