Loving is a biographical drama that tells the real life story of Richard (Joel Edgerton), a taciturn, white Virginian bricklayer, and Mildred Loving (Ruth Negga), a soft-spoken, sweet, black and Native American ancestry woman. The plaintiffs in the 1967 U.S. Supreme Court (the Warren Court) decision Loving v. Virginia, which invalidated state laws prohibiting interracial marriage.
How far we've come. Parts of this movie will enlighten and others will break your heart. Two people who are madly in love (ironically with the surname Loving) cannot be together because of archaic laws that were held over from slavery days. Even though they are married and with an unborn child, Richard and Mildred are arrested (by Marton Csokas feared Sheriff Brooks) and told they must leave the state or risk jail time.
The performances are excellent if a little subdued throughout, and while this is always fascinating, you wish there was a little more oomph! The racism Mildred and Richard experienced is disgraceful but also somewhat glossed over, with a television drama of the week vibe. Still, this is a very good movie with superior production values, and the final credits reveal will move you.
