Thunderball (1965)

Sean Connery had fully embodied 007 by now, with all the (tongue in cheek) wit and sophistication required for the role, but the 4th film in the franchise is uneven.

The opening at the health farm retreat could be edited down to five minutes (instead of thirty) and not lose much in the process.

The plot sees Bond trying to find two NATO atomic bombs stolen by SPECTRE, which holds the world ransom for £100 million in diamonds under threat of destroying an unspecified metropolis in either the United Kingdom or the United States.

The sections on land are classic Bond (with stunning cinematography), while the underwater scenes are well shot (with some decent action) but are unnecessarily drawn out. As usual Bond integrates himself with the baddies (see Goldfinger, 1964) who could kill him any moment, which is intriguing but also far fetched / silly.

Adolfo Celi is memorable as Emilio Largo (voice dubbed by Robert Rietty): SPECTRE's Number Two, as is Claudine Auger as Largo's mistress (and Bond Girl) Domino (voice dubbed by Nikki van der Zyl.)

Middle of the pack Bond film is still entertaining (for Spy fans.)
